A colossal Capital City Clash

Wildcats, Sonoma State to wrap up series Sacramento’s Raley Field Sunday

Since it hit the schedule, it’s been a well-known fact that the Capital City Clash between the Chico State and Sonoma State baseball team would be a big game on a grand stage between big-time programs. Now you can add big-time postseason implications to that list, making it one of the most anticipated Chico State baseball games in years.

The teams, tied for third place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings, will wrap up a four-game series at Sacramento’s Raley Field, home of the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats, Sunday at 1 p.m. The series starts Friday with a 3 p.m. game in Rohnert Park and continues with a doubleheader in Rohnert Park beginning Saturday morning at 11.

Tickets for the Capital City Clash are $15, include admission to any 2012 Sacramento River Cats game, and a portion of every ticket purchased using the offer code wildcats goes back to the Chico State athletics department. Get them at www.rivercats.com/college.

Chico State enters the series with an overall record of 26-12 and conference mark of 16-12. Sonoma State, also 16-12 in the CCAA, is 18-18 overall.

Both teams are coming off disappointing efforts. The Wildcats dropped three of four at Cal State San Bernardino two weeks ago heading into last weekend’s bye, and they’ve lost five of their last eight.

But that doesn’t come close to matching the struggles Sonoma State has had of late. The Seawolves have dropped eight straight to free-fall into third place after holding a comfortable lead atop the conference midway through the season.

With 12 games remaining on their conference schedules, including these four, both teams are attempting solidify their hold on a top-four finish in conference and the CCAA Championship Tournament berth that goes with it. They each trail second-place Cal State San Bernardino by one game and conference leader UC San Diego by four games. However, UC San Diego and Cal State San Bernardino will meet four times this weekend, while fifth-place Cal Poly Pomona will take on sixth-place Cal State L.A. in a four-game series as well.

All four will be broadcast locally on Fox Sports 101.7 FM and 1340 AM. The broadcasts will also be accessible via streaming audio by clicking on the Wildcat Webcast link on the right side of this page.
