CHICO – With precious little time to savor its success at last weekend’s Coyote Labor Day Classic, the Chico State volleyball team is back on the hardwood – and back on the road – Tuesday against William Jessup in the Wildcats’ final tune-up before Friday’s California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) conference opener. Tuesday’s match with William Jessup is slated for 7 p.m. in Rocklin.
Chico State went 3-1 during the Coyote Classic, winning three straight after bowing in five sets in the season-opening match against Alaska Anchorage. The Wildcats dropped just one set the rest of the tournament, sweeping Dominican and No. 17 Western Washington on Saturday.
The ’Cats were led by Makenzie Snyder, who piled up 60 kills in her first action in nearly two years. She had plenty of help, though, as Jessica Leek (41 kills), Jacqueline Johnson (34 kills and a .356 attack percentage) and Alex Shurtz (29 kills) made significant contributions to Chico State’s offensive attack. Setter Sable Villaescusa averaged over 10 assists in the season’s opening weekend, while freshman Lauren Orozco paced the Wildcats with 51 digs. As a team, Chico State averaged 13.2 kills a set and converted its attacks at a .243 clip.
William Jessup enters Tuesday’s clash with the ’Cats 0-9 on the season. The Warriors suffered a rough weekend in Seaside as part of the two-day Otter Classic, failing to win a set in losses to Cal State Stanislaus, Cal State Monterey Bay and Westmont College. William Jessup, an NAIA school and part of the California Pacific Conference, is led by outside hitters Hanna Baldwin and Lauren Koons, and freshman middle hitter Sara Hickenbottom.
Chico State opens up CCAA play Friday, traveling to Rohnert Park to take on Sonoma State for a 7 p.m. match.
