Bauhs battling the best

Wildcat alumnus competing in the World Championships this weekend

DAEGU, South Korea – It may be a stretch to expect you to tune in for live coverage of Chico State alumni Scott Bauhs’ 10,000-meter race at the World Track & Field Championships Sunday morning at 3:30 AM. Then again, it was also quite a stretch to think the skinny freshman in the picture above would one day be running in the World Championships. Bauhs made that part come true. The rest is up to you.

By virtue of his third-place finish at the USA Track & Field Championships in June, Bauhs is in Daegu, South Korea for the World Track & Field Championships. Live coverage of the race, which takes place at 7:30 PM on Sunday night in South Korea, is available at www.universalsports.com though there is a small fee to watch. Tape delayed coverage of the World Championships will be on NBC on Sunday morning from 9:30-11, PST, but it is unknown whether Bauhs’ race will be among those shown.

Bauhs is certainly thinking about his Chico State roots while in South Korea. He sent an email on Wednesday night addressed to Athletics Director Anita Barker all of Chico State’s athletes, coaches and staff in which he implores current student athletes to “make your life as simple as possible, don't hang on to grudges and negativity and stay on top of what really matters whether it is school, practice, your relationships with the people that helped you get to where you are and the people that are going to help you take the next step.” The entire message is posted at www.chicowildcats.com.

Bauhs, a two-time NCAA Champion on the track, won the 2008 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championship and then decided to begin his professional career a month later. He’s the owner of four All-American honors on the track and four more in cross country. He also still holds the NCAA Division II record in the 10,000 meters. His time of 27:48.06 is the fourth fastest in NCAA history.

The Mammoth Track Club member also holds the record for the quickest half marathon ever posted by US runner 21-and-under and is also the youngest American ever to break both the four-minute mile and the 28-minute 10,000 meters.

This is Bauhs’ third World Championship event. He finished 51st at the 2008 World Cross Country Championships and 53rd at the same even two years later. The adidas-sponsored athlete also placed third in the USA Track & Field Cross Country Championships and fourth in the 3000 meters at the USA Track & Field Indoor Track and Field Championships in 2010.
