LOS ANGELES – Makenzie Snyder made history Saturday night, becoming just the sixth Chico State volleyball player ever to record her 1,000th career kill. But if she and the Wildcats continue to play the way they have during their current six-match winning streak, it may not be the last time she’s a part of history being made in 2011. Snyder, who needed six kills entering the night to reach 1,000. The junior finished with nine as the Wildcats swept host Cal State L.A. 25-20, 25-15, 25-16.
Jessica Leek paced the Wildcats with 10 kills on 18 swings, while true freshman Lindsay Quigley required just 12 attempts to nail down seven kills as the 24th-ranked Wildcats improved to 14-3 overall and 9-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) at the midway point of the conference season.
Alex Schurtz’s nine kills gave the Wildcats four players with seven or more kills. Snyder led the way with 12 digs and Lauren Orozco notched 10. Sable Villaescusa stocked up 31 assists and Jacqueline Johnson led the Wildcats with four blocks.
Snyder is the latest Wildcat with 1,000 kills, joining Lindsay Macias (1,475 kills from 2005-08), Gillian Heydorff (1,204 kills from 2006-09), Stacey Clifton (1,166 kills from 2001-03), Amber Crezee (1,049 kills from 1997-2000), and Traci Ciapponi (1,024 kills from 1989-92).
The team’s current winning percentage of .824 is on pace to be the best in the program’s history. The 1992 team’s 25-7 record and .781 winning percentage is the best thus far.
The Wildcats will attempt to take a step closer to history when they host Humboldt State Friday night on “Pack The House Night.” The third-place Wildcats will face off against second-place Sonoma State on Saturday; both matches are scheduled for 7 p.m.
