'Cats sweep Western Oregon, finish day one 2-0

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – After taking a 3-1 match from Dominican University to kick off Sonoma State’s two-day Seawolf Spike Tournament, the Chico State women’s volleyball returned to the court Friday afternoon and defeated a talented Western Oregon squad, sweeping the match in three sets, 25-22, 25-17 and 25-23 to improve to 2-0 on the young 2009 season.

As she did in the ’Cats morning match versus Dominican, Gillian Heydorff provided the majority of the muscle at the net, piling up 16 kills in the three game match against Western Oregon. Makenzie Snyder also added 16 kills and three service aces, while freshman Jessica Leek turned in another solid effort with six kills on the afternoon.

Jessica Simms
Freshman setter Sable Villescusa rung up 35 assists for the victorious Wildcats, while fellow freshman Jessica Simms led all ’Cats with 21 digs.

Chico State is back in action Saturday with two more matches in the final day of the Seawolf Spike Tournament. The Wildcats take on Northwest Nazarene at 9:00 a.m., then tangle with Notre Dame de Namur at 4:30 p.m.
