Wildcats win finale 8-4 behind Gleason, Seaver

SEASIDE, Calif. - Michael Gleason got his first start of the season in Chico State's last game of the year. With the way he pitched Sunday, he likely won't have to wait so long in 2010. Gleason fired six shutout innings, allowing just one walk and one hit, to lead the Wildcats to an 8-4 victory against CSU Monterey Bay in the season finale for both teams.

Gleason, who improved to 1-1, attacked the strike zone all day. He struck out four and went to three balls against only three of the 20 hitters he faced. Gleason could have feasibly gone beyond the sixth after setting down the Otters in order in the fifth and sixth, but Head Coach Dave Taylor wanted some of the other pitchers to get one more chance on the mound in 2009.

Meanwhile, Wildcats' first baseman Kevin Seaver stamped his name in the Chico State record books with his 3-for-5 effort that raised his season batting average to a Chico State single-season record of .442. Seaver banged out his fourth and fifth doubles of the weekend, drove in three runs, and scored twice.

Jordan Larson also banged out three hits, while Josh Meagher and Bryan Willson notched two hits apiece. Eric Stephens and Kyle Eveland drove in two runs apiece as the Wildcats built an 8-0 lead and cruised to victory.

Chico State finished its season with an overall record of 35-21. The Wildcats finished in fifth place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings at 20-16.
