CHICO, Calif. – There has never been a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championship Baseball Tournament that didn’t include Chico State. But without a Wildcats sweep at CSU Monterey Bay and a Cal State Stanislaus sweep of Cal State Dominguez Hills this weekend, that 10-year streak will come to an end.
The Wildcats will play four games at Monterey this weekend beginning Friday at 3 p.m. Cal State Dominguez Hills will play four games at Cal State Stanislaus this weekend also beginning Friday at 3 p.m. Any Chico State loss or Cal State Dominguez Hills win would secure the fourth and final CCAA Championship Tournament berth for the Toros.
If the Wildcats do miss out on the CCAA Tournament, that doesn’t necessarily preclude them from the NCAA Championship Tournament West Regional. Current West Region No. 1 UC San Diego is seemingly a lock for one of the four West Region berths. No. 2 Western Oregon, No. 3 Sonoma State, and No. 4 Cal State L.A. presumably still have some work to do, however. Thus, a sweep this weekend, whether it results in a CCAA Championship Tournament berth or not, would be a welcome result for the Wildcats, who have been to the postseason 13 years in a row and advanced to the NCAA Tournament 11 times in those 13 seasons.
Whether or not they make the postseason, the Wildcats have an opportunity to stamp their legacy in the record books this weekend. Their current team batting average of .344 is tied for the highest in Chico State history with the 1997 National Championship team’s, and their 56 home runs are 10 shy of the 1987 team’s school record. They would need somewhere in the neighborhood of 57 hits this weekend to threaten the hits/nine innings record set by that 1997 team, and the single-season sacrifice fly and sacrifice bunt records are also possibilities.
Individually, Kevin Seaver is batting .417 and threatening Steve Gotowala’s 1997 single-season batting average record of .422. And with an on-base percentage of .508, he’s also threatening Dave Mallas’ of .513 set in 1997.
A number of other Wildcats have a chance to solidify their spots within the single-season and career top-10.
