CHICO, Calif. – The Chico State baseball team returns to action Saturday as it takes on the Sonoma State Seawolves in doubleheader action at Nettleton Stadium. It’s a big series for both teams, which will conclude with a twinbill Monday afternoon in Rohnert Park – the Wildcats need some wins to move up the standings of a tight CCAA race, while the Seawolves look to strengthen their grip on second place and pick up some ground on conference-leading UC San Diego.
The ’Cats enter Saturday’s series opener 22-17 on the year and tied for seventh place in the CCAA with a 12-12 record. After winning five straight to close out the month of March, Chico State has lost four of its last six contests, dropping three of four to UC San Diego last weekend and splitting a doubleheader at home Tuesday against Concordia University. The Wildcats continue to be the conference’s top offensive team, leading the CCAA in team batting average (.342), hits (449), home runs (49) and runs scored (278).
Sonoma State, the No. 15-ranked team in Division II, comes to Chico with a season mark of 24-9 and a 16-8 conference record. The Seawolves have won three straight (including a two-game sweep of Cal State Stanislaus last weekend) and 10 of their last 13 contests. Sonoma boasts the top pitching staff in the CCAA with a team earned run average of 3.13.
