POMONA, Calif. – Josh Meagher and Kyle Eveland each hit two-run homers and the Chico State baseball team scored in each of the last five innings, but that was not enough to match the Cal Poly Pomona offense in a 16-13 loss to the Broncos to open a four-game series Friday at Scolinos Field.
The Broncos scored in eight of nine innings to improve to 6-0 at home this season. Cal Poly Pomona is now 7-6 overall and 2-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Chico State fell to 7-6 overall and 3-2 in the CCAA. The teams will continue their season with a doubleheader Saturday against Pomona beginning at 11 a.m.
Despite allowing 16 runs on 18 hits and totaling four wild pitches, a balk, and three passed balls, the Wildcats got the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning. But Robert Mills struck out looking with two runners aboard and Chico State dropped the high-scoring series opener.
Bryan Save took the loss to fall to 1-1 on the season.
The Wildcats actually outhit Pomona, piling up 19 safeties on the day. Meagher, Jordan Larson, Bret Ringer and Jimmy Dodos each had three hits to pace the Chico State attack. In addition to hitting his team-high sixth homer, Meagher extended his hitting streak to 11 games, while Larson has now hit safely in 13 straight.
