Wildcats drop series finale at Mesa State

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Josh Meagher hit his fourth home run in three days and Adam Arakawa notched his first as a Wildcat, but the Chico State baseball team stranded 14 runners on base and dropped its series finale at Mesa State College 14-7 Saturday.

Meagher finished 4-for-6 and hit a two-run blast to right field in the eighth. Kyle Eveland had three hits and Arakawa finished with two. But the Wildcats fell to 4-4 with the loss. Starter Andrew Pluta (1-1) took the loss.

Mesa State, which entered the weekend ranked No. 23 in the nation, improved to 5-2.

After falling behind 5-1, the Wildcats got back into the game with Bret Ringer's RBI-grounder in the third and Meagher's two-run single in the fourth.  But Matt Bodenchuck hit a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth to break the game open.

Chico State is back in action Feb. 20-22 when it hosts Cal State San Bernardino to open California Collegiate Athletic Association play. The first game is set for Friday at 2 p.m. They'll play a doubleheader Saturday at noon and a single game Sunday at noon.
