’Cats rebound with convincing three set win over Toros

CHICO, Calif. – It didn’t take long for the Chico State volleyball team to put the disappointment of Friday’s loss to Cal State L.A. in the rear view mirror – the No. 25 Wildcats came out with a noticeably more aggressive attack Saturday against Cal State Dominguez Hills, delivering a solid performance in a three set sweep of the Toros at Acker Gym by scores of 25-20, 25-10 and 25-15.

Saturday’s victory moved Chico State to 16-5 on the season and 7-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAA). Cal State San Bernardino dropped its eighth straight match to fall to 1-17 overall and 1-10 in conference play.

The Wildcats jumped out to a big lead early in the opening set, as Gillian Heydorff, Makenzie Snyder and Kayla Baumgardner each posted a pair of kills to stake Chico State to a 12-3 lead. The Toros could get no closer than eight points the rest of the way, committing four attack errors, while Baumgardner and Jessica Leek put up two kills apiece to power the ’Cats to the 25-10 win.

The second set was a much more competitive one, with seven tie scores and six lead changes.  With the score even at 16-all, Chico State finally took control of the contest – Snyder racked up two service aces, Leek also registered an ace and Heydorff contributed two late kills to finish off a 9-4 run to give the Wildcats a 25-20 victory.

Dominguez Hills battled Chico State early in the third set, but with the score knotted up at five apiece, the Wildcats scored 16 of the next 21 points to take a commanding 21-10 lead. The ’Cats spread the offense around, with Heydorff, Morgan Hammerstrom, Jacqueline Johnson and Jordan Bambas all registering kills during the stretch. Heydorff provided the exclamation point with a kill for match point, and Chico State took the 25-15 decision to complete the sweep of the Toros.

Heydorff led a balanced Wildcat attack with eight kills, 13 digs and a pair of solo blocks on defense; Baumgardner finished the night with seven kills, while Snyder collected six kills, 11 digs and four service aces. Sable Villaescusa racked up 25 assists, while Gigi Terlouw posted 11 digs.
