CHICO, Calif. – Gillian Heydorff hit a career-high .632 on the way to 13 kills to help lead the Chico State volleyball team to a sweep of visiting Humboldt State Friday night at Acker Gym, to the delight of 420 in attendance. Chico State’s 25-15, 25-23, 25-15 win in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opener for both teams was its third straight home sweep against Humboldt State.
The 25th-ranked Wildcats improved to 8-3 this season, including 3-0 at home. Crystal Trifeletti and Megan Cape logged nine kills apiece for the Wildcats, who got 37 assists without a handling error from senior setter Erica Brick. Cape added a trio of service aces and joined Brick with a team-high seven digs.
Jolian Arzadon paced Humboldt State with nine kills and 13 assists. Danielle Wells added seven kills and five blocks. Dani Nelson led all players with 10 digs.
The Wildcats limited Humboldt State to five kills in the first set, while Heydorff, Trifeletti, and true freshman Makenzie Snyder tallied three kills apiece. Humboldt State made the second set much tighter as Wells and Toni Kroeker combined to go seven-for-seven on attacks and the Lumberjacks rallied from 24-18 down to close to 24-23. After serving five straight points while facing match point, however, Nelson served wide to hand the set to Chico State.
The Wildcats dominated the final set, hitting .414 as a team behind Heydorff’s six kills in eight attacks without an error. Trifeletti, meanwhile, was four-for-four in that set, while Brick dished out 14 assists.
Chico State is back in action Saturday night against Sonoma State at 7 p.m. The Seawolves also got off to a 1-0 start in CCAA play Friday with a three-set sweep at Cal State Stanislaus.
