Chico State loses close one to Cal Poly in five

CHICO Calif.—Gillian Heydorff moved into the All-Time Top 10 for career kills at Chico State, but it wasn’t enough to push the Wildcats to victory as they lost to visiting Cal Poly Pomona in five sets Friday night at Acker Gym.
   
The two teams alternated sets with Chico wining the first and third sets, 25-23, 25-19, and Cal Poly winning the second and fourth, 25-14, 25-20, forcing a fifth set.
   
After falling behind early in the fifth set, 9-4, Chico battled back to within three points at 13-10, but lost the set, 15-11.
    
The loss drops the Wildcats to 15-8 on the season and 8-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). 

Lindsay Macias has found her late-season touch, recording her seventh double-double of the season and third in a row with 17 kills and 17 digs. Three other Wildcats recorded double digit kills in the match. Heydorrf had 14, Crystal Trifeletti tallied 13 and Makenzie Snyder added 11.

Megan Cape led Chico with 17 digs and Kelly Smiland added 15 of the team’s 87 digs. Erica Brick had 54 assist, marking the fourth time she’s gone over 50 assist this season.
    
The 21st-ranked Broncos (13-5, 10-3 CCAA) were led by Vanessa Williams’ 18 kills and six blocks. Williams committed no hitting errors in 35 attempts to record a .514 hitting percentage. Libero Rafaela Rosa led all players with 20 digs.

The Wildcats are now 8-22 lifetime against the Broncos and have lost four straight.

Next up for the ‘Cats is a visit from No.2 Cal State San Bernardino, 7 pm, Saturday, at Acker Gym.
