Chris Colla kicked off his final season in a Chico State men’s golf shirt with the lowest score of his career last week, a 4-under par 66 in Tuesday’s final round. The effort was enough to move him six spots up the leaderboard into a tie for second place at the Sonoma State Invitational, along with Wildcat of the Week honors.
Colla carded four birdies, along with an eagle on the 485-yard, par-5 10th. That followed Monday’s rounds of 71 and 70. His three consecutive team-low rounds led the Wildcats to a third-place finish in the 11-team field.
Colla’s 3-under-par 207 was good enough to lower his career scoring average to 73.85, which leads all active Wildcats. Over the 21 rounds spanning his junior and senior campaigns, he’s averaged 73 strokes per round.
Colla now has top-10 finishes in three of his last five events, dating all the way back to his first collegiate victory at the Sierra Central Wildcat Classic at Butte Creek Country Club on Oct. 15, 2019. He’ll have a chance to defend that title at the Wildcats’ home tournament on October 11-12 when they host the Wildcat Classic at The Links at Rolling Hills in Corning. But before that, Chico State will be traveling to the Pacific Northwest for their next tournament action. The Wildcats will compete September 27-28 at the Western Washington Invitational, taking place at Loomis Trail Golf Club in Blaine, Washington.
