With the departure of leading scorer Dani O'Keefe to graduation, the Chico State women's golf team was in need of someone to step into that role. So far, Abbey McGrew has been the one to take up the slack – and then some. McGrew managed one top-10 showing in 10 events last season. Here in the 2016-17 campaign, it's taken the senior just four rounds to double that total, thanks to a seventh place showing at the Western New Mexico Fall Intercollegiate. Her consistent play and top-tier results have earned McGrew her second consecutive Wildcat of the Week honor.
McGrew was outstanding in both rounds of the tournament, played at The Golf Club of Estrella in Goodyear, Arizona. The opening 18 saw the Yolo product fire a 1-over par 73 – matching her lowest single-round score of the young season – to lead the Wildcats to within two strokes of the lead following Monday's action.
McGrew was just as successful in Tuesday's final round, playing even par through the first 17 holes before settling for a 2-over par 74. The 36-hole total of 3-over 147 (her lowest two-round score ever as a Wildcat) put McGrew in a group of six golfers finishing the tournament seventh in the 106-player field.
McGrew is currently riding a string of three consecutive sub-75 rounds. She had just one during the entire 2015-16 season.
McGrew and the Wildcats are back in action October 3-4, competing in the Dixie State Invitational at Sand Hollow Resort in St. George, Utah.
