Since playing her first game as a Wildcat way back on September 5, 2013, Torey Thompson has served as the touchstone to Chico State volleyball's offensive attack. The senior setter has not only assisted in countless kills, but through the years has developed an all-around game that has reached its pinnacle in 2016. Thompson's talents were on full display last week, resulting in two victories, a unique place in the Chico State record book, and being selected as the latest Wildcat of the Week.
Thompson doled out 74 assists (averaging 10.57 assists per set) in Chico State's wins over Stanislaus State and Humboldt State, and the Newport Beach product also contributed a combined 10 kills, 27 digs, three service aces and three blocks to help the Wildcats improve to 12-4 overall and establish a two game lead in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) North Division with a 6-1 conference mark.
In Saturday's four-set win over Humboldt State, Thompson dished out 43 assists and racked up eight kills and a team-high 15 digs. She also joined a very exclusive club, becoming just the third setter in Chico State history (Sable Villaescusa and Erica Brick are the others) to amass 4,000 career assists.
Thompson's season average of 10.85 assists per set currently leads the CCAA and ranks 27th in the nation among Division II setters.
Thompson and the Wildcats are on the road this week: Tuesday against Sonoma State, Friday versus Cal State Monterey Bay, and Saturday against Cal State East Bay. Â
