Chico State Athletics

Since mid-December, Shay Stark has stepped up to become one of the most productive scorers for the Chico State women’s basketball team. The Stockton native has averaged 12 points a contest in her last five games, helping the ’Cats notch four wins during that stretch. Stark served as the catalyst of Chico State’s 58-48 road victory Thursday over San Francisco State, scoring 14 of her team-high 16 points in the second half and hit five shots in as many attempts during a 19-0 run that sealed the win. Stark’s game-changing offensive jolt makes her the latest Wildcat of the Week.   

All told, Stark hit eight of her 11 field goal attempts on the evening, while also pulling down six rebounds, grabbing two steals and handing out an assist as Chico State won its second straight contest to improve to 10-5 on the season and 6-4 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play.

With the Wildcats trailing San Francisco State 43-31 midway through the third quarter, Stark dropped in three straight shots to help Chico State cut the deficit to two heading into the fourth quarter. She hit two shots to put the Wildcats on top 50-43, then added two more baskets late in the game to lock down the double-digit win.

Stark is currently second on the Wildcats in scoring (9.1 points a game), rebounds (4.5 boards a night), and assists (2.7 per night).  

Stark and the Wildcats return home Saturday to host UC Santa Cruz in a non-conference tilt at Acker Gym. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
