It's no coincidence that when the Chico State women's golf team achieves something historic, Heather Fegley's name is prominently displayed on the Wildcats' scorecard. A year ago, the senior from Chico was part of the 'Cats quintet that set a school record for best single- and two-round score at the Dallas Baptist Lady Patriot Classic, and she turned in a career-best effort last spring to help the Wildcats win their own Chico State InterWest Invitational. Fegley once again played a leading role in Chico State staging a miraculous come-from-behind tournament win – and once again re-writing the record books – at the season-opening Western New Mexico Fall Intercollegiate. Her contribution has earned Fegley Wildcat of the Week honors.
With Fegley carding a team-best 79-73-152 to finish tied for 12th place on the individual leaderboard, Chico State came back from 19 strokes back on the final day of play to leapfrog eight teams and take top honors in the 36-hole tournament. Fegley and Wildcat teammates Spencer Downey, Dani O'Keefe, Sarah McComish and Abbey McGrew all shot sub-80 rounds on the final 18 to finish with a combined total of 4-over par 292, smashing the program's previous 18-hole record of 301. The 'Cats' 37-over 613 at the Western New Mexico Fall Intercollegiate matched the program's best 36-hole total, set last year in Dallas.
Fegley has now racked seven top 20 tournament finishes in her Chico State career, and has placed in the top 30 a dozen times in 27 career starts.
The Chico State women's golf team will shoot for back-to-back tournament wins when it returns to action Oct. 21-22 at the Sonoma State Fall Invitational.
