For the past three seasons, Maddy Wong has been one of the go-to scorers for the Chico State women's basketball team. During the current campaign, the senior guard has been the Wildcats' No. 1 option. Wong literally lit it up from behind the arc during the 'Cats' Southern California road trip to earn Wildcat of the Week honors, connecting for a dozen 3-pointers.
Wong averaged 19.5 points in games at Cal State LA and Cal State Dominguez Hills, shooting over 46 percent (13-for-28) from the field and a sizzling 54.5 percent (12-for-22) from 3-point range, helping Chico State move to 9-5 on the season and 5-4 in conference play. Wong also posted six steals, five assists, four rebounds and a block to the 'Cats' attack.
The Wildcats fell to Cal State LA on Thursday, but Wong nailed five 3-pointers to register a team-high 18 points, moving past Chico State Hall of Famer Kim Abts for third place on the 'Cats' career 3-pointers list. Saturday at Cal State Dominguez Hills, the Elk Grove product drained a career-best seven treys—one short of the single-game school record—on the way to a 21-point performance in the Wildcats' 81-64 win.
Wong ranks second in the CCAA with 51 3-pointers and ninth in scoring at 13.1 points a game. With 190 career treys, she trails only Audi Spencer (196) and Whitney Branham (208) for the most threes in program history.
Wong and the Wildcats play a single game this week, traveling to the Bay Area Thursday to face San Francisco State. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
