The Chico State women's basketball team was searching for a spark and some swagger to snap a three-game losing streak Saturday night against Cal Poly Pomona. Brynn Thoming came off the bench to provide both, helping lift the Wildcats to a 79-67 victory. The Arroyo Grande product turned in arguably her best performance ever in a Wildcat uniform, setting new career highs in scoring and rebounding, leading a first-quarter charge that put the team in control, and powering a 9-2 fourth-quarter run that sealed the win. Her impressive performance makes Thoming the latest Wildcat of the Week.
In less than 14 minutes of action, Thoming came off the Chico State bench to score 13 points, connecting on 4-of-6 from the field, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers, and hitting three of her four free throw attempts. She also hauled in five rebounds and doled out two assists to help the Wildcats to the win and improve to 5-4 on the season.
Thoming's first trey of the night gave the 'Cats a 15-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. She added a bucket and two free throws in the second period, and poured in five points in the decisive fourth quarter, with her second 3-pointer stretching the Wildcats' lead to 13. Pomona would get no closer than 10 the rest of the way.
Thoming and the Wildcats are back in action Thursday, hosting Cal State Monterey Bay in Acker Gym at 5:30. Saturday Chico State travels to Rohnert Park for a 1 p.m. tilt against Sonoma State.
