Chico State true freshman sprinter Kris Castillo's collegiate career is off to a blazing start. Castillo finished second in the 100 meters at Saturday's Wildcat Invitational with a time of 10.69 seconds, which ranks fourth in the nation and leads the California Collegiate Athletic Association this season. It's the fastest by a Wildcat since Phil Bailey's 10.67 in 2017, which ranks 10th in Chico State history.
The American Canyon High School product also ran the third leg of the Wildcats' second-place 4x100-meter race, and ran the opening leg for the winning 4x400-meter relay squad. The Wildcats' 4x100-meter relay team's time of 42.37 seconds ranks 19th in the nation thus far. The 4x400-meter team's time of 3:22.19 ranks 13th in the nation.
Just how fast is Castillo? It only took him two collegiate meets to be named Wildcat of the Week.
He was in the running after his first. Castillo's season-opening 200-meter time at the Kim Duyst Invitational ranks 13th in the nation and third in the CCAA so far. It was also faster than any Wildcat ran in the event in 2018.
Castillo and the 'Cats will be back out on the track this Friday and Saturday in the state capital, competing in the Sacramento State Hornet Invitational, hosted by Sacramento State at Hornet Stadium.
Castillo is expected to compete in the 100- and 200-meter dash, along with the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.
