William Curless spun a gem in his first start of the season. He backed that up with another gem in his second start Sunday evening at Nettleton Stadium. The senior from Salt Lake City has now thrown 15 innings in 2019 without allowing an earned run, and 18 innings a row dating back to last season, spanning six appearances.
Curless carved up Stanislaus State in a no-decision Sunday, scattering four singles and striking out six to earn Wildcat of the Week honors.
Over his last 18 innings, dating back to last season, the Monterey Peninsula Community College product has allowed only one unearned run on eight hits, while striking out 17.
He has been especially stingy with runners in scoring position. This season, hitters are 0-for-6 with four strikeouts against Curless with a runner on second or third. During his last 18 innings of work, they are 1-for-11 with seven strikeouts.
Curless currently leads all California Collegiate Athletic Association pitchers with an ERA of 0.00 with 15 innings pitched and boasts the lowest batting average against (.140) among all pitchers have have worked at least 14 innings.
Barring rain or something unforeseen, Curless' next start will take place next weekend during the Wildcats' four-game series at San Francisco State. The series begins with a single game Friday at 2 p.m., continues with a doubleheader Saturday at 11 a.m., and concludes with a single game Sunday at 11 a.m.
