Chico State women’s soccer center back Abbie Jones capped an historic weekend for the Wildcats with the golden goal in Sunday’s 1-0 victory against Humboldt State, earning Wildcat of the Week honors in the process.
Jones captained the ’Cats’ back line to a pair of 1-0 wins as they broke the program record for consecutive matches without a loss with their 11th Friday, and then added to that number Saturday.
Jones and the Wildcats allowed just six shots on goal and 18 total shots all weekend to improve to 8-0-4 on the season. They remain one of only eight unbeaten teams in NCAA Division II.
With just 5:59 remaining in Sunday’s second overtime period, Jones provided the exclamation point to the weekend.
Just prior to Korie Bozart’s corner kick, Jones jogged into the box unmarked and found an open space in front of the far post. Bozart hit her target and Jones headed the ball down and into the back of the net on one bounce for the golden goal, and her first goal of the season.
Jones, the lone Wildcat to play in every minute of every match this season, has helped the defense record seven shutouts in 12 matches. The team has allowed only six goals all season. They’ll attempt to improve those numbers, and match the school record for consecutive wins (8) Wednesday when they take on Stanislaus State in Turlock.
