Chico State senior striker Erin Woods opened California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play with three goals in two matches over the weekend to lead the Wildcats to a 1-0-1 record and earn Wildcat of the Week honors.
The senior from Santa Cruz (Harbor High School) scored the equalizer in the 77th minute of Friday night's 1-1 draw with Cal State LA.
She stayed hot Sunday, breaking open a scoreless deadlock with two second-half goals in a six-minute span. Chico State went on to beat Cal State Dominguez Hills 2-1 to extend its home unbeaten streak to 19 matches.
Woods' first goal of the season, which came Friday night, was one of the most sensational of her four-year career. After winning a loose ball on the left flank, Woods dribbled inside toward the top of the 18-yard box before curling a gorgeous strike into the left upper-V from 24 yards out.
Sunday, she did her damage from much closer. Woods volleyed Brielynn Tovani's free kick from near midfield over her left shoulder with her right boot. The ball bounced once before nestling into the netting inside the right post in the 59th minute of play.
She struck again in the 64th minute, this time on a corner kick. Woods won Jordan Doukakis's corner kick in the mouth of the goal by chesting it down and then snapping it home with a chest-high, left-footed strike.
Woods now boasts 14 career goals, including 11 since the start of last season.
