Chico State men's soccer player Justin Bethke delivers service with a smile and rejects advancing offenses with a smirk. The Wildcats' right back bagged a pair of assists and helped the defense register a shutout last week to earn Wildcat of the Week honors.
Bethke helped limit Concordia to just four shots in a 2-0 shutout victory Thursday at University Soccer Stadium. He also logged his first assist of the season.
Andrew Hazzard helped set things in motion, playing a ball back to Bethke from inside the box.
Bethke's blast toward the near post was deflected by Cavaliers' goalkeeper Grant Alcorn and bounced back toward the top of the box. Cooper Renteria was ready, ran onto the rebound, and hit a rocket inside the near post for a 1-0 lead.
Saturday, Bethke notched his second assist early in a 2-2 draw at Fresno Pacific. Bethke set up Egujie with an angled pass toward the top-right corner of the box, and Egujie's shot back across the flow of the defense found the back of the net.
Bethke, a junior from El Dorado Hills (Oak Ridge HS) has now notched four goals and three assists in his past 18 matches.
The Wildcats (2-1-1) return home to open California Collegiate Athletic Association play this weekend. They'll take on Cal State L.A. Friday night at 7 and Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday afternoon at 2.
