The Chico State men's track & field team is the only team in the nation that has already won the Webb Cup, given to the nation's deepest decathlon program regardless of division, twice. The Wildcats just might be able to win it again thanks in part to the emergence of Randall LeBlanc.
The sophomore from Castro Valley continued his ascent among his peers by winning one of the events featured in the decathlon, the pole vault, at the Wildcat Invitational held March 10 at University Stadium, earning Wildcat of the Week honors in the process.
LeBlanc cleared 4.65 meters, a personal-best height and enough to edge a close, competitive field of 12 that included teammates and foes alike. His effort ranks fourth in Division II this year. Teammate Lane Andrews was third at 4.50 while a trio of Wildcats—Dylan Smith, Zehr Blanco, and Cristian Brady—were part of a five-way tie for fourth at 4.35.
LeBlanc already owns an NCAA Provisional mark in the decathlon when he totaled 6,565 points in the first meet of the season, the 33rd annual Chico Multi Classic, as he finished second to Andrews. They currently rank 1-2 in the nation in that event. LeBlanc won the pole vault in that competition as well.
LeBlanc and the Wildcats will be back in action this weekend at the Sacramento State Hornet Invitational at Hornet Stadium, home of the 2014 and 2017 USA National Championships.
