Justin Briggs rebounded from one of his most frustrating nights of the season with one of his most sensational. The sophomore sank 9 of 11 shots and scored a career-high 23 points to lead the Chico State men's basketball team to an 85–58 victory at Cal State LA Saturday night.
Ironically, his previous career-high of 19 points was set exactly one year earlier, on Jan. 27, 2017, against Cal State San Bernardino.
Briggs also pulled down eight rebounds Friday, and contributed an assist and a blocked shot at The Eagles Nest, earning Wildcat of the Week honors in the process.
The 6-foot-9 center scored 10 of the Wildcats' first 16 points as they built a double-digit lead that would last throughout the night.
Briggs hit all four of his second-half shots to raise his field-goal percentage to .597, which would lead the CCAA if he met the criteria to qualify (5.0 made/game). He is close to jumping onto Chico State's career field-goal percentage list, needing just 10 more makes to qualify. He is currently shooting .581 in his career (190-for-327). Don Fowler holds the career field-goal percentage record of .576.
Briggs is also just six blocks shy of reaching 100 in his career. He already ranks second in Chico State history in rejections behind only Jordan Semple's 153.
Briggs and the Wildcats host Cal State Monterey Bay Thursday and Cal State East Bay Saturday. Both games are scheduled to tip off in Acker Gym at 7:30 p.m.
