Before the 2016 season even got underway, Chico State volleyball Head Coach Cody Hein said of senior setter Torey Thompson: "She's literally the engine that makes us go. I think Torey's primed and motivated to make this season a really special one." Thompson more than lived up to Hein's prediction, leading the Wildcats to a 23-win season and an NCAA Championship Tournament appearance. And in fitting fashion, Thompson became the program's all-time assists leader in the final match of her amazing four-year career. Her accomplishments are more than enough to make Thompson Wildcat of the Week.
Â
Thompson doled out 21 assists in Thursday's opening-round loss to eventual NCAA West Region champion Alaska Anchorage, giving her 4,586 and moving her past current Wildcats assistant coach Sable Villaescusa into first place on Chico State's career assists list.
Â
Earlier in the week, Thompson received All-West Region honors from both the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and the Division II Conference Commissioner's Association (D2CCA). Thompson will find out later this week if she is also in line for All-America accolades.
Â
Besides being the program's all-time assists leader, Thompson finishes her Chico State career ranked third in Wildcat history in assists per set (11.0) and digs (1,357), eighth in digs per set (3.25) and sixth in sets played (417).
