Chico State starting pitcher Clayton Gelfand fired a complete-game six-hitter to lead the Wildcats baseball team to a 2-1 victory at San Francisco State in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday.
 
The sophomore Wildcat of the Week from West Linn, Ore., shut out the Gators through eight and two-thirds innings.
 
Gelfand (3-3) faced just six batters over the minimum, scattering five singles and a double while striking out three. He did not walk or hit a batter and gave up just one extra-base hit.
 
Gelfand is in his first season in the starting rotation. His previous career-high in innings pitched was seven and two-thirds frames.
 
Gelfand, doubling as the team's designate hitter, also had a strong week at the plate. He hit .350 (7-for-20) and drove in three runs. Gelfand hit safely in all five games and ranks second on the team with a .329 batting average after batting a team-high .345 last season as a freshman.
 
Gelfand and the Wildcats close out the regular season this weekend at Nettleton Stadium with a four-game series against Cal State East Bay.
