After an opening-round 80 in the Grand Canyon Invitational, no one was expecting the kind of numbers Chico State women’s golfer Sarah McComish would post over the tournament’s final 18 holes. All the sophomore from Salem, Ore., did was deliver the best round ever by a Wildcat women’s golfer, shooting a 1-over-par 72 to help Chico State finish in 10th place overall and earn a share of fourth on the individual leaderboard. McComish’s finest performance of the season – and her Chico State career – makes her the latest Wildcat of the Week.
McComish, who now has four straight top 20 tournament finishes and five on the season, absolutely sizzled on the back nine, shooting a 32 that included an eagle on the 295-yard, par-4 14th and birdies on two of her final four holes. The 72 matched the best individual round of the Grand Canyon Invitational and the score one stroke better than teammate Shelby Hooper’s previous school record of 73, set last March at the Lady Otter Spring Invitational.
With the fourth place finish, McComish has a pair of top 10’s to her credit in the 2011-12 season, and is averaging a team-best 81.1 strokes per round.
The Chico State women’s golf team plays its final regular season tournament Apr. 16-17 at the Cal State Monterey Bay Invitational at Blackhorse Golf Club in Seaside.
