The advantages of having a deep roster have certainly not been lost on the Chico State volleyball team. When All-American Jessica Leek was lost for the season, the Wildcats didn’t panic, knowing they had the talent to fill the sudden void in the team’s offensive attack. One of those players in the wings, freshman Katie Morley, promptly stepped up to enjoy her biggest weekend as a Wildcat, helping Chico State defeat both Sonoma State and San Francisco State and vault the ’Cats into sole possession of first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). For her efforts, Morley is the latest Wildcat of the Week.
The Chico Hills native contributed a combined 11 kills over the two weekend matches, posting an impressive .381 attack percentage. In addition to three digs, Morley was nails on the defensive side of the net, delivering three block assists.
Friday against Sonoma State, Morley pounded out a season-high seven kills to go along withthree block assists as the Wildcats beat Sonoma State in four sets. Morley chipped in with four more kills Saturday as Chico State’s evenly-distributed offense made short work of San Francisco State, sweeping the Gators to improve to 10-1 overall and 4-0 in CCAA play.
Morley and the Wildcats are back in action this weekend, hitting the road to take on CCAA powerhouse UC San Diego on Friday and six-time defending conference champion Cal State San Bernardino Saturday.
