Drew Kitchens made the first two starts of his collegiate career last weekend. If he keeps performing like he did in that role they should be the first two of many.
Â
The Wildcat of the Week scored a season-high 10 points and chipped in a rebound and two assists Friday night. Saturday, he was one of the catalysts of the Wildcats' thrilling 75-73 overtime win against Cal State San Bernardino, scoring a new season-high 12 points and added two rebounds, two assists, and two steals in 36 turnover-free minutes.
Â
The junior guard/forward averaged 11 points, 1.5 rebounds, two assists and a steal per game while shooting 9-of-17 from the field and 4-of-9 from 3-point range.
Â
Saturday, Kitchens sank a pair of 3s early to help set the tone. He missed the first part of the season with an injury but seems to be rounding into form. He hit 7-of-16 threes over the past four games, providing the Wildcats' offense with an added shooting threat they were sorely lacking. He is also adept at getting the basket and converting. Twice in Saturday's second half he spun beautiful reverse layups high off the glass and in.
Â
Kitchens and Wildcats, 8-5 overall and 5-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, host San Francisco State and Sonoma State this Friday and Saturday, respectively. They'll be attempting to rise out of a three-way tie for second in the CCAA with Sonoma State and UC San Diego while chasing down conference co-leaders Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Stanislaus, which are each 6-2.Â
