One of the keys to the Chico State women's basketball team's success in 2014-15 rides on the long-range shooting accuracy of guard Annie Ward. The senior from Lafayette is being counted to do what she's done for the past three seasons – produce with consistency from beyond the 3-point arc. Ward was in vintage form Sunday against Holy Names, knocking down four treys en route to a season-high 16 points in Chico State's 70-40 road win over the Hawks. Her impressive display from downtown has earned Ward Wildcat of the Week honors.
Ward finished the afternoon tilt against Holy Names 6-for-13 from the field and 4-of-7 from 3-point range, while also contributing two rebounds and an assist. She got the Wildcats on the board with a 3-pointer to start the game, then when Chico State's offense cooled off late in the first half, Ward scored seven of the team's final nine points to help the 'Cats maintain a double-digit lead at halftime.
Ward was one of the main cogs in Chico State's 22-1 run second half run that decided the contest. She connected on two more 3-pointers as the Wildcats went up by 39 points, eventually posting the 70-40 victory to improve to 3-1 on the season.
Ward has six 3-pointers in the Wildcats' first four games of 2014-15, and with 94 career treys is just six shy of becoming the 12th player in Chico State women's basketball history with 100 3-pointers.
Ward and the Wildcats begin conference play this weekend, traveling to Southern California to take on Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday and Cal State L.A. on Saturday.
