Fifth-year senior Dillon Breen is beginning his final season with the Chico State cross country program. If his first race was any indication, Breen plans to go out with a bang. He's this week's male Wildcat of the Week.
Â
Scoring for the team for the first time in his career, Breen finished 39th overall and ninth among non-Division I competition at the Stanford Invitational Saturday in Palo Alto. He covered the eight-kilometer course in 24:36, giving the Wildcats the event's best 1-5 split of just 30 seconds.
Â
The Wildcats, ranked 4th nationally, rolled to the Non-Division I team title Saturday, outrunning UC San Diego 30-100. Unofficially, had the race been scored with all 39 teams, the Wildcats would have run fourth behind only Washington State, UC Santa Barbara and Stanford. All three of those teams are ranked among the West Region's Division I top 10. Meanwhile, Breen helped the Wildcats beat two other teams currently ranked in the West Region – Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and the University of San Francisco.
Â
Breen will attempt to build on his performance this Saturday at the Charles Bowles Invitational in Salem, Ore.
