Sophomores are supposed to be inexperienced and inconsistent. Alistair Docherty has broken that mold for the Chico State men’s golf team. No players on the 5th-ranked Wildcats, and few players in the nation, have been as consistent as the sophomore from Vancouver, Wash., our Wildcat of the Week.
Â
Docherty has played 11 events this season and finished among the top 20 every single time. In eight of those instances he’s finished in the top 10, including his team best seventh-place finish at last week’s NCAA West/South Central Super Regional that helped propel the Wildcats into NCAA Championship Finals this Monday through Friday in Allendale, Mich.
Â
The All-California Collegiate Athletic Association performer shot a 4-over par 220 to finish seventh out of 108 golfers at the Super Regional. His team-low round of 73 helped the Wildcats rally from sixth place all the way up into a tie for 2nd.Â
Â
Consistency? He’s got it. Docherty carded rounds of 74-73-73 last week and has posted the team’s best or second best score 20 times in 32 rounds this season. He leads the team with a stroke average of 72.8.
Â
Docherty will try to make it a dozen top-20s at the NCAA Championships.
