Here’s what makes Wildcat of the Week Amir Carraway a special basketball player: He can shoot the 3, hit a mid-range jumper, score in the post, defend, rebound, block shots, and more. And he’s happy to do whatever it takes to help his team win. This weekend the fourth-year senior on the men’s basketball team did it all.
Carraway averaged 18 points on 14-of-22 shooting (64 percent), nine rebounds and 2.5 steals per game to lead the Wildcats to a pair of convincing home wins while helping the ’Cats climb back into the national rankings at No. 25.
Carraway contributed a career-high 25 points and a season-high 11 rebounds in Chico State's 79-65 win against Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday night. He made 9-of-15 shots (3-of-6 from 3-point range) while also collecting three assists and a pair of steals.
Saturday, in a 75-46 win against Cal State L.A., Carraway contributed seven rebounds, three steals and a block to ground the Golden Eagles’ offense while finishing with 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
The product of Franklin High School in Vallejo has put together quite a collegiate career thus far. His 108 3-pointers and 48 blocked shots are both 10th most in school history. His career free throw percentage of .805 is eighth highest. And he’s on pace to become the 14th player in Chico State history to eclipse 1,000 career points by the end of the regular season.
Chico State returns to action this weekend, hosting Cal State East Bay Friday and Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday at Acker Gym. Both games are slated to tip off at 7:30 p.m.
