Jazmine Miller is one of the Chico State women’s basketball team’s most versatile players – the junior guard’s ballhandling, defending and shooting skills have been a huge part of the Wildcats’ success for the past three seasons. But it’s when she knocks down 3-pointers that Miller truly becomes one of the most dangerous scorers in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The treys were falling in abundance over the weekend, resulting in a win over Cal State East Bay – and Miller earning Wildcat of the Week honors.
Miller scored a combined 22 points in the two games played at Acker Gym, going 6-for-8 from behind the arc. She also contributed six rebounds and three steals as Chico State rebounded from a tough 51-44 loss Friday to Cal State Monterey Bay to beat East Bay.
Miller, the Wildcats’ top 3-point shooter, had actually entered the weekend mired in a long distance shooting slump, missing her last 13 3-point attempts and hitting just two treys in her last six games. She connected on her first 3-point shot against Monterey Bay, then went wild the following night against East Bay, draining five 3-pointers (a career high) in six attempts and leading the ’Cats with 19 points in a 56-50 victory over the Pioneers.
Miller is currently ranked eighth in the CCAA in scoring, averaging 12.4 points a game, fifth in 3-pointers (27), sixth in 3-point shooting percentage (37.5 percent) and 11th in assists (2.6 a game).
Chico State kicks off the second half of its conference schedule this week, hitting the road for games against Humboldt State Thursday and Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday.
