Jason Conrad played perhaps his best all-around collegiate Saturday night to earn Wildcat of the Week honors. Conrad put the clamps on Humboldt State standout center Alec Williams, displayed aggressiveness and adeptness on the way to 11 points, and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds to lead the Wildcats to victory over rival Humboldt State.
The 7-foot senior center set the tone by winning his head-to-head battle with Williams, a transfer from San Diego State who was averaging 18.4 points per game. Conrad challenged every shot, limiting Williams to just 12 points on three made baskets in 15 attempts.
Offensively, Conrad put on a skills clinic. He stepped outside to knock down a long jumper, attacked the basket to draw fouls and get to the free throw line, scored a key basket on a gorgeous jab-step move and hook shot in the lane, and threw down a ferocious follow dunk that provided the night’s biggest highlight.
Conrad also blocked a shot to move past Wildcat greats Andre Speech and Aaron Martella into sole possession of fifth place on the school’s career blocked shots list with 54. Conrad needs six more rejections to catch former teammate Terence Pellum for fourth.
Conrad’s first chance to inch closer comes Thursday when the Wildcats host Cal State Stanislaus in another California Collegiate Athletic Association showdown at 7 p.m.
