Few athletes in Chico State history have had a better week than Sable Villaescusa just did. The senior setter set Chico State’s career assists record after being honored on Senior Night in her final home match, became just the second setter in Chico State history to log 1,000 assists in four consecutive seasons three nights earlier, and helped lead the Wildcats to three important wins. All of that made her an easy choice for Wildcat of the Week.
Villaescusa registered 55 assists, giving her 4,458 for her Chico State career, in the Wildcats’ four-set victory against Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday night. Her arcing pass leading to an Elle Larronde kill late in the third set moved Villaescusa past All-American Erica Brick as the program’s all-time assists leader.
Villaescusa’s 55 assists were just one shy of her season-high of 56, set three nights earlier in a four-set win against Cal State Stanislaus. In the process she became only the second setter in Chico State volleyball history to record 1,000 assists in four consecutive seasons. She also doled out 44 assists in the Wildcats’ four-set win against Cal State East Bay Friday night.
Far from a one-trick pony, Villaescusa added 36 digs, 13 kills, seven blocks and a pair of service aces over the course of Chico State’s three wins. She played nearly flawlessly, registering only one error on 35 attacks and did not have a single service error or ball-handling error. Villaescusa now ranks seventh in school history with 914 digs.
