In her nearly four years as a member of the Chico State women’s soccer team, midfielder Denni Jo Berger has established a reputation for being involved in just about all the Wildcat successes. The senior from Claremont was at it again over the weekend, assisting in the goal that would turn out to be the difference in the ’Cats’ 2-1 victory Friday over Cal State East Bay. Her key play against the Pioneers and hustle throughout the team’s two weekend matches have earned Berger Wildcat of the Week honors.
Berger delivered her first assist in nearly two years in the 21st minute of Friday’s match with East Bay, booting a cross pass right in front of the Pioneers’ goal, setting up Scotie Walker’s subsequent kick to the back of the net. The score gave Chico State a 2-0 lead, and it would turn out to be huge, as East Bay battled back to score in the 82nd minute. The Wildcats withstood the late charge to come away with the 2-1 victory.
It was the second time this season that Berger has burned East Bay. Her lone goal of the season was the only score for Chico State in a 1-0 victory over the Pioneers Sept. 16.
With Friday’s assist, Berger has now tallied five goals and six assists in her Chico State career.
The Wildcats return home this weekend, taking on Cal Poly Pomona Friday and San Francisco State Sunday at University Soccer Stadium.
