Like many of her Chico State teammates, women’s track & field sprinter Amilia Santos is improving with every meet, shaving a bit more off her times as the 2012 season progresses. The sophomore from San Diego delivered her best effort yet in the 200-meter dash during Saturday’s Sacramento State-hosted Hornet Invitational, and was part of the Wildcats’ 4x100 relay team that posted a time that ranks among the top performances in the event in school history. Santos’ most productive meet in a Chico State uniform has earned her Wildcat of the Week honors.
Santos began Saturday as the leadoff runner in the women’s 4x100, and together with Erika Kalmar, Melissa Rene and Nicole Cooper, finished fifth overall with a time of 47.83 seconds – the third-fastest in Chico State history and just .63 seconds shy of an NCAA provisional mark.
Later in the day, Santos finished 13th in the 100-meter dash with a season-best time of 12.55 seconds, then came back less than 90 minutes later to register her fastest time ever as a Wildcat in the 200-meter dash, clocking in at 25.73 seconds to place 14th at the Hornet Invitational. Her time marked the fourth straight meet in which she eclipsed her previous best.
The Chico State women’s track & field team returns to action this Saturday, hosting the Wildcat Invitational at University Stadium.
