In volleyball, the main job for a setter is to basically make others on the team look good. Sable Villaescusa has consistently provided Chico State hitters with effective sets for over two years now, and last week the junior from Rancho Cucamonga turned in one of the most productive weeks of her Wildcat career. Villaescusa was among several key cogs in the ’Cats 3-0 week, doling out 107 assists while contributing nine kills, 14 digs, three service aces and three blocks as Chico State defeated non-conference foe Simpson University Tuesday and posted back-to-back victories over San Francisco State and Cal Poly Pomona over the weekend. Her impressive performance has earned Villaescusa Wildcat of the Week honors.

Villaescusa played the first set of Tuesday’s match against Simpson, registering 10 assists in the Wildcats’ sweep of the Red Hawks. She came back Friday to pile up a season-high 55 assists along with two service aces and a solo block as Chico State defeated San Francisco State in four sets. Saturday against Cal Poly Pomona, Villaescusa handed out 42 assists to go along with four kills, seven digs and two blocks in the ’Cats come-from-behind five set victory over the Broncos.

Villaescusa is currently ranked as the top setter in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, averaging 10.52 assists per set. Her 107 assists last week gives her 2,637 as a Wildcat, moving her into third place on Chico State’s career assists list.

Chico State is on the road this weekend, traveling to southern California to take on Cal State San Bernardino Friday and UC San Diego on Saturday.
