Phil Johnson hasn’t found his name on the lineup card as much as he would have liked thus far this season. But that may change following his big weekend against UC San Diego. Johnson banged out four hits in his last five at-bats of the series, including three doubles, and drove in three runs in perhaps his busiest weekend of the season. The senior transfer from Texas A&M Kingsville earned Wildcat of the Week honors in the process.

 

Johnson’s pinch-hit RBI double in Saturday’s doubleheader opener broke up a shutout in the eighth inning and helped earn him another pinch-hitting opportunity in the second game. His one-out single in the sixth helped spark a two-run rally in which the Wildcats nearly came back to tie the game.

 

With two pinch-hit doubles to his credit on Saturday, Johnson got what he was hoping for on Sunday when he found his name in the starting lineup as the designated hitter. He didn’t disappoint, going 2-for-3 with a double off the wall and two runs batted in. He was also hit by a pitch.

 

Johnson raised his batting average to .367 with his big weekend. He’s hoping that when the Wildcats host Cal State Stanislaus this Tuesday for a doubleheader at 2 PM, he’ll get an opportunity to raise it once again.
