Since transferring to Chico State from Shasta College two years ago, women’s track and field thrower Ashley Webster has delivered some fine performances. As a junior, Webster etched her name in the Wildcat all-time top 10 in both the shot put and hammer throw, and finished 2010 with a strong third place showing in the hammer at the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships. This season has started out to be even more memorable – after winning the shot put and hammer at February’s Wildcat Relays, Webster re-wrote the Chico State record books in the hammer during last Saturday’s Kim Duyst Invitational in Turlock. Her record-setting performance has earned the Klamath native the Wildcat of the Week award.
Webster’s hammer throw of 159-feet-01 not only took first place at the Kim Duyst Invitational, it was the longest throw ever by a Chico State women’s track and field athlete, surpassing Sarah Ward’s 2009 school record toss by a foot-and-a-half and Webster’s own PR by over 11 feet. She was far from being a one-event wonder Saturday in Turlock – Webster also posted a third place finish in the shot put (41-feet-05.75) and a fifth in the javelin (102-feet-03).
Webster and the Wildcats are back in action this Saturday, as Chico State travels to Davis to take part in the Aggie Open.
