With a bye week and rainouts forcing the Chico State softball team to sit idle for three weeks, it was a welcome sight to see the Wildcat hitters take out their frustrations on Cal State Stanislaus pitching over the weekend. The ’Cats pounded out a combined 26 hits in their doubleheader sweep of the Warriors Sunday, with no less than five players contributing at least three hits on the afternoon. But no Chico State player wielded a more booming bat than catcher Hailey Stockman – the junior from Auburn was 5-for-8 at the plate, with two doubles, two home runs and six runs batted in while reaching base six times and piling up 13 total bases in the two Wildcat victories.
In the opener of Sunday’s twinbill, Stockman went 3-for-5 with two homers, a double and five RBI as Chico State trounced Cal State Stanislaus 17-7. In the nightcap, Stockman got the Wildcats on the board with a first inning RBI single, and finished the game 2-for-3 and reaching base three times in Chico State’s 5-1 win over the Warriors. If that wasn’t enough, Stockman logged 14 innings behind the plate and caught every offering from Wildcat pitchers Sunday.
Through Sunday, Stockman is hitting .429 on the season and leads the Wildcats in home runs (2), RBI (7), doubles (3), extra base hits (5), total bases (18) and slugging percentage (.857).
Chico State concludes its series with Cal State Stanislaus with a Monday doubleheader, then returns home this Friday and Saturday to take on San Francisco State at University Softball Field.
