Damario Sims made a name for himself by coming in off the bench and getting to the rim in explosive fashion to provide a spark for the Chico State men’s basketball team last season. Turns out the kid can score from 20 feet out as well. Sims netted 9-of-16 3-pointers on the way to Mac Martin Invitational MVP honors this weekend and was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Player of the Week Monday. He's also been named the Wildcat of the Week.
Sims averaged 20 points on 61 percent shooting (14-of-23), including 56 percent from beyond the arc, as the Wildcats defeated Northwest Christian and Dominican over the weekend to improve to 4-0.
Sims scored a team-high 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including 4-of-7 from downtown, in Friday’s 85-72 win against Northwest Christian. The sophomore from Oakland’s McClymonds High School also tallied three rebounds and three assists. Saturday, in a 71-52 victory against Dominican, Sims matched his career high with 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting, including 5-of-9 from 3-point range. He also grabbed three rebounds and a steal.
Sims has now scored 14 or more points in five of the last six games dating back to last season.
He’ll attempt to continue his hot streak this weekend when the Wildcats host long-time rivals Humboldt State and Sonoma State. They take on Humboldt State Friday at 7:30 and Sonoma State Saturday at 7:30.
