Chico State men’s soccer player Chris Akwaja has slowly but surely put together the best season of his three-year Wildcat career, posting personal bests in goals scored, assists, points, shot percentage and shot-on-goal percentage. The junior forward was productive again last week, booting home a pair of goals and adding an assist as the ’Cats won two of their three matches to close out the regular season. Akwaja’s fine play on the pitch has earned him Wildcat of the Week honors.
Monday against Cal State Monterey Bay, Akwaja got Chico State on the scoreboard with a first period goal as the Wildcats went on to beat the Otters 3-1. Wednesday versus Cal State Stanislaus, Akwaja’s goal in the 64th minute tied up the match; 10 minutes later he fed teammate Ferid Celosmanovic for the game-winning score as Chico State edged the Warriors 2-1.
With nine goals and two assists on the season, Akwaja is ranked fifth in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) in goals scored, and seventh in total points (20). For his Chico State career, Akwaja has netted 14 goals and handed out four assists in 54 total matches.
Akwaja will get a chance to add to his totals this weekend, as Chico State takes part in the CCAA Men’s Soccer Championship Tournament. The Wildcats will go up against Cal State Dominguez Hills in first round action Friday afternoon at Warrior Stadium in Turlock.
