Freshman hitter Alex Shurtz has been a major component of the Chico State volleyball team’s offensive attack all season, but this past week she took her game to the next level with three outstanding performances to help the Wildcats put an end to their six match losing streak. In three contests, Shurtz collected 49 kills and posted a .329 hitting percentage; she also contributed 13 digs and five solo blocks. Her impressive efforts have earned the Moraga native the Wildcat of the Week award.
Wednesday against Cal State Stanislaus, Shurtz registered a team-high 18 kills and a .429 hitting percentage, adding five digs and a solo block. In Friday’s four-set win over Cal State Dominguez Hills, Shurtz led the Wildcats with 17 kills, adding three digs and two solo blocks. Saturday versus Cal State L.A., Shurtz piled up 14 kills – her sixth straight match of double-digit kills – and chipped in with five digs and two solo blocks as Chico State topped the Golden Eagles in four sets.
Shurtz currently ranks second on the ’Cats with 213 kills on the season and leads the team in average kills per set (2.92). Her 11 solo blocks are the most of any Chico State player this year.
Chico State returns to action this weekend, traveling to Rohnert Park to take on Sonoma State Friday, then to Arcata to face Humboldt State Saturday.
