Chico State Athletics

Luis Martinez makes good things happen for the Chico State men's soccer team. The Sophomore midfielder scored the golden goal in the third minute of overtime to lift the Wildcats to a 2-1 victory at Cal State Monterey Bay Friday and then helped give Chico State the lead for good when his hard cross bounced off a defender and in to the net during Sunday's 2-1 win at San Francisco State. Martinez has been named Wildcat of the Week for his efforts.

Martinez finished his freshman season with a pair of goals and four assists. But Head Coach Felipe Restrepo promised to lean on him more heavily in 2010 and the results have been spectacular. Martinez has just the one goal, but his solid play in the midfield has helped the Wildcats get off to a 4-0 start.

Friday, Martinez rebounded home Mike Janjigian's deflected shot to give the Wildcats their first overtime victory of the season in the 93rd minute of action. He finished the match with four shots, including two on goal.

Sunday, Martinez helped the Wildcats get on the board just six minutes in. His hard cross targeting Ferid Cellosmanovic in a very dangerous position was deflected into the net by a defender desperate to keep the connection from being made. He went on to take a pair of shots, including one on goal.

Martinez and the Wildcats will start a string of five straight home matches this weekend when Cal Poly Pomona comes to town Friday night at 7 PM and Cal State San Bernardino visits Sunday at 11:30 AM.
