Over the course of her Chico State track & field career, Katie Hawley has been one of the Wildcats’ most consistent and productive distance runners. The 2023 season has proven to be one of her best—last month the San Diego native posted a personal best mark in the 800-meter run, and at the May 4–6 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships, Hawley ascended the awards podium for the second time as a ’Cat in the 1,500-meter run. Her efforts in both the 800- and 1,500—resulting in a combined 10 team points for Chico State at the hotly-contested conference competition—makes Hawley the latest Wildcat of the Week.

Hawley experienced two very busy days while in action at the Mangrum Track & Field Stadium on the Cal State San Marcos campus. On Friday, she began the second day of the CCAA Track & Field Championships by qualifying for the finals of the 1,500-meter run, finishing third in her heat and sixth overall with a time of 4:50.31. Later in the day Hawley punched her ticket to the 800-meter finals, placing fourth in her heat and seventh overall at 2:17.20.

In the meet finale Saturday, Hawley’s time of 4:39.38 in the 1,500 finals was good for a third place finish and All-CCAA accolades—the second time she’s earned a place on the awards podium (she placed second in the 1,500 at the 2022 CCAA Track & Field Championships). Hawley finished the day with a solid fifth place showing in the 800-meter finals, stopping the clock at 2:17.17.

Hawley will be one of 13 Chico State women’s track & field athletes heading to Southern California this weekend to take part in the APU Franson Last Chance meet in Azusa.
